When a young man he went to Clarkesville, Tenn., where he learned the trade of a blacksmith with his brother John S. From there he went with his brother to Eddyville, Caldwell county, Ky., and from there to Sangamon county, arriving late in Dec., 1825, in what is now Woodside township. He was married Dec. 2, 1828, to Sarah Henderson. They had two children-- CLARISSA J., born in Sangamon county, married Jeremiah Penicks. They had four children, and Mr. Penicks died. Mrs. Penicks and her children reside at Palmer, Christian county. JAMES H., died in his fourteenth year. Mrs. Sarah Ball died March 12, 1832. Japhet A. Ball was married May, 1834, to Marinda Davis, who died April 12, 1855. Mr. Ball was married Sept. 30, 1863, to Melissa Morison. They have two children-- JOHN M. and PANNIE M., and reside east of Sugar creek, in Ball township, four miles southeast of Chatham. Japhet A. Ball enlisted July, 1827, in Col. Tom M. Neal's Battalion of mounted volunteers, to fight the Indians in the north part of the State. This was known as the Winnebago war. He again enlisted, and was commissioned by Gov. Reynolds as First Lieutenant, June 18, 1831. A treaty with Black Hawk, the chief, terminated hostilities. The Indians commenced depredations again, in the spring of 1832. J. A. Ball was commissioned by Gov. Reynolds, April 28, 1832, as Capt. of a Company in Long's Odd Battalion of Inf. It was mustered out in June, 1832, for the purpose of changing to a mounted organization, but that ended his military career. Mr. Ball served from 1843 to 1856 as Justice of the Peace. He was elected and commissioned by Gov. Bissell, Nov. 14, 1857, as Associate Judge of Sangamon county, for four years. The township organization being adopted in 1860, terminated his official career. The township of Ball was named for him. Judge Ball says that on the first day of Jan., 1831, while the "deep snow" was falling, he killed fourteen deer. They would founder in the snow, and were easily taken. He built a saw mill on Sugar creek, and sold a large quantity of lumber at the mill, and at times kept teams running to Springfield. The scarcity of money for a few years after the financial crash of 1837, was very severe on the new settlements. The Judge says that during one of those years he did an extensive business in the lumber trade, and his total receipts in cash was exactly seventy-five cents. Mrs. Nancy Ball, mother of John S., Japhet A., Smith, William, Jane, Bethany, Polly, Elizabeth and Lucy, came with the last of her children to Sangamon county in 1829, and died at the house of her son, Japhet A., in 1846.

From Mary Sanderson Fox: Beulah Stiles Brown thinks that John donated one acre to the Turner's Point Masonic Lodge. John was a freighter during the Civil War, transporting goods to the army. He came home after the war broke and was about to loose his property for non-payment of taxes. John swore Cynthia to secrecy and went to Mississippi where he was an exhibition wrestler for 6 months or so, he made enough money to come home and redeem his land. He considered wrestling to be a bad thing, so he did not want his children or neighbors to know where he had gone, but it was the only way to recoup his losses. According to Beulah Stiles Brown, John must have been a reprobate because he was not good to his family. Beulah thinks John died at his homeplace. It was in Hunt County, Tx. but was listed in Kaufman County in 1860-1870. She doubted John did alot of travel as he has 400+ acres to clear of timber and a home to build. The beams under those old houses were made of hand hewn logs about 8-12 inches thick. The lumber was hauled from East Texas. This meant 8-10 days journey. The old home that Beulah lived in, which was smaller than John's, took a year to build. 1838- John left his Lincoln, County, Tn. home for Texas with a horse, saddle and $600. 'grubstake' from his father. He recieved a conditional certificate for 320 acres of donation land in Nacogdoches County dated Nov. 7, 1839. His unconditional headright was dated May 4, 1841. 1841- John returned to Tenn. when his father died August 1841, remaining a few years. He married Mary Wagoner March 1, 1842, but she apparently died without issue 1846-John returned to Texas. In Nacogdoches County, January 17, 1847, he married Cynthia. 1857-April 8, John bought 105 acres in Kaufman County. 1867- John is listed on the voters registration for Kaufman County with this information; Precinct 38, resident in the state for 16 years, resident in the county and precinct 6 months, native of Tennessee. John farmed and made leather goods with the Turners'. John also did some contract freighting during the Civil War, sometimes taking young Elisha with him. The 1900 Hunt County Census shows three widow(er)s in one household. Monroe Humphreys, 50, with sons John, 25 and James, 14, his father-in-law, John Fox, 86, and sister-in-law, Cynthia DeMoss, 41, with daughter, Bettied E., 11, (husband and 1 child deceased). This is the last known record of John. He reportedly died 1902 and is believed buried in Campground Cemetery at Poetry, Texas. I just discovered that on the Rootsweb Campground Cemetery enumeration, that John Fox was reported in the Terrell Daily Tribune to have died 16 Nov 1901 and buried in an unmarked grave at Campground Cemetery.

John Hooper  was born in Abt 1818, Virginia.

Elisha Turner   and Rachel Brandon Turner  had Cynthia Newman Turner  in Abt 1818, Louisianna. From Mary Sanderson Fox: In Nacogdoches County, January 17, 1847, John married Mrs. Cynthia Beauclark Douglass, daughter of Elisha Turner. More about this name according to Dianne Allen; Little is known about Cynthia's life. Census records indicate she was born in Louisians 1818-19. I cannot locate her apparent early marriages. I believe 'Beauclark' is a misapplication of 'Bois d'arc' pronounced bow-dark, the fork in the Trinity River on which they lived. The only Douglass I found on the tax roles is a Kelly H. Douglass in Nacogdoches County 1838-39. I believe the marriage is correct, however because on Nov. 4, 1847, John sold his headright certificate to Cynthia's brother, Zachariah Turner. The bill of sale, written on the back of the certificate, was signed by John H. Fox, Elisha Turner and Goodman Deweese. 'Crazy Woman Springs' at Mineral Wells, Texas, are said to be named for Cynthia. John took her there 1881-82 following a nervous breakdown. She supposedly recovered after a few weeks of drinking the water. Her date and place of death are unknown. She is believed buried at the Campground Cemetery at Poetry, Tx. Also; She is believed to have been married at the Saint Landry's Parish, Louisiana. John and Cynthia came to Poetry in about 1855-56. Elisha gave them 200 acres, then John bought 130 acres.

Thomas Hathcock  died in ? 1818, Richmond County, North Carolina.

Vardry (Echols) McBee   and Jane Alexander McBee  had Vardry Alexander McBee   in 1818. A will of marked conciseness and brevity, and the shortest in the county is that of the late V.A. McBee. Mr McBee was a University graduate, lawyer, three times clerk of the Superior Court, and left a considerable estate in North and South Carolina. His entire will with date and signature contains but twenty-three words: "I will all of my estate, real and personal to my wife, Mary Elizabeth McBee, this 31st day of March, 1888. V.A. McBee."

Georg Friedrich Lauterbach , then age 38, and Anna Margaretha Sahr Lauterbach , then 33, had Johann Rudolf Lauterbach   on Friday, Apr 9, 1819, Trebgast, Bavaria. Died of Pulmonary consumption age 40 years, 5 months, 14 days. When married at age 28 listed himself as Maurergeselle (Bricklayer journeyman) und Gutsbesitzer (Landowner). There was tradition amoung the Kansas descendents that this family had eight children, only four living to maturity. There are mentions of eight children in an early Kansas history book and the obituaries of George and John George. However, there seems to be no actual record in Bavaria that an eighth child was born. An eighth child is not found in the registry books in Trebgast or Neudrossenfeld churches. I think that this tradition started with a mistake in the Kansas History book, and was repeated in the obituaries. Therefore, I have decided to no longer include an eight child in my work. Samuel Lawson Steel  was born on Tuesday, Jul 27, 1819, Green County, Ohio. All the legal and census records have his named spelled Steel - but Thomas, (his son), spelled his - Steele, and so did my father and the rest of the children. I have no idea why. I do think some times the census taker just put down what they heard and were not that correct about the spelling. (Peggy Steele Voght, Nov 2005)

Note that both her father and her husband, Rudolf, were of the same trade, both maurergeselle, (bricklayer journeyman). About the name Cunigunda or Kunigunde, It seems that Kunigunde was an old German saint, the wife of Holy Roman Emperor, Heinrich II, the last king of the royal house of Saxony (he's a saint too). She lived around the year 1000. Another reference (Weis) says, following Charlemagne, Bernard, King of Italy, was married to Cunigunde. Date on her is year 835. Derived from the Germanic element kuoni "brave" combined with gund "war". I have also been told by Germans that the name is much older than that, pre-Christian, like Brunhilde, Sieglinde, the Wagner German-opera sorts of names. I have no reason to doubt this, but none of it explains why the name enjoyed something of a vogue among late 17th and early 18th century Germans. But it did.
