Shirley Holder was generous enough to pass on that she feels the parents of William are Zephaniah and Jane. Zephaniah Roberts (also seen as Roberds) was born c1759 and died c1809 in Pendleton District, South Carolina. Shirley shared that Jane is in the 1840 Franklin County, Tennessee census.
Know all men by these presents, that I Wm. Roberts of Bedford county and state of Tennessee for divers good causes and considerations me hereunto moving have made, ordained, authorised, nominated and appointed, and do by these presents, make, ordain, authorise, nominate and appoint _______ of D___ County, state of Tennessee, my true and lawful attorney for me and in my name and for my own use, to ask, demand and sue for, recover and receive of ____________ District Paymaster for the State of Tennessee, all such sum or sums of money, debts or demands whatsoever which are now due and owing unto me the said Wm. Roberts by and from the United States for my services as Private in Captain John Jackson company as per my certificate of service herewith. And to have, to use and take all lawful ways and means, in my name, or otherwise for the recovery thereof, by attachments or otherwise and to compound and agree for the same and acquitences a sufficient discharges for the same for me in my name to make, seal and deliver, and do all other lawful acts or things whatsoever concerning the premises fully and in every respect as I myself might or could do were I personally present at the doing thereof. In witness thereof, have hereunto set my hand and seal this 11th day of January 1815. (Wm. Roberts seal)

I John J. Smith after being duly sworn doth depose and say that I was well acquainted with William Roberts for a number of years during his lifetime and Mary Roberts whose affidavit appears above on this paper and that the said William and Mary lived together as husband and wife during my acquaintance with him and that so far as I know their marriage was never questioned by any person. That the said William Roberts departed this life on the 26th day of August 1855. That I was present at his death and attended his burial and saw him buried. That I have searched his papers and find no record of his marriage with the said Mary Roberts and from my knowledge I am certain that it is an impossibility for the said Mary Roberts to obtain any Record Testimony of her marriage with the said William Roberts or the testimony of any person who was present at their said marriage. I would further state that the said Mary Roberts is still a widow.

I, A. J. C. Roberts being duly sworn do depose and say that I was well acquainted with William Roberts whose name appears in the foregoing affidavit for a number of years during his lifetime and that him and the said Mary Roberts whose affidavit appears first above lived together as man and wife and was known and reported as such by all their neighbors that records testimony or the testimony of persons who saw them married cannot be obtained. That I was present when the said William Roberts departed this life also saw him buried he died on or about the 26th day of August 1855 and that the said Mary Roberts is still a widow.
