| When Pearl was a young boy about five years old, a farm hand was chewing tobacco. Pearl ask for some and liked it. He said it tasted like licorice candy. He ask for more and the farm hand gave it to him. All of a sudden Pearl felt like he was turning green. Very sick, he tried to get through the gate to the farmhouse, but missed the gate and instead slumped on the fence, where everyone left him until he recovered.
