Notes
A personal note about my Aunt Thelma: She was one of my personal heroes growing up. I spent many happy weeks at their farm near Mayfield, Kansas as a child, and I loved her dearly. I admired her tremendous strength of character, her sense of fun and music (she could really pound out a tune on the old piano!), and the way she handled her duties as the wife of a farmer, including plowing the fields when the need arose! Whenever I need a boost in life calling on personal resources, I always think of Aunt Thelma, and try to imagine what she would do in my place. I rather imagine this great strength is a Lauterbach family trait, as I see it in her children! (Barbara Ball Gilbert, 29 Mar 2002).
Medical
Mama (Thelma) had diabetes. She came down with it in her 50's and was able to control it for a long time with medication by mouth but after Daddy passed away, I think she was not taking very good care of herself and it got really bad. She eventually had to even wake up in the middle of the night and eat something protein and she was giving herself shots and testing her blood. (Wanda Marlene Jackson Bedwell)123
