| When I was 3 or 4, Grandpa began having a series of strokes, which pretty much left him in a wheelchair. I recall my mother perching me in his lap, and pushing the wheelchair on nice afternoons down to Washington Park, about six blocks away. At that time we lived at 6632 Cottage Grove Avenue, where I was born. My grandparents lived downstairs - we on the second floor. In July 1916, Grandpa had a heavier stroke, and kept telling my Mom to hurry with delivery of my brother - he just tried to live to see the new baby, but sad to say, he died on July 29, 1916. My brother, Clarence Henry, was born two weeks later- on August 15, 1916. He was named Clarence for my Uncle Julius' wife, Clara, nee Schmidt. (Helen Marion Lauterbach, in 1989 letter)30 |
