Anecdotes
My Grandmother, Josephine Beulah Wade Hathcoat, told me that when she was a young girl, her grandmother came and stayed for a visit. Her grandmother, Thursy, brought along a coffee mill, and coffee, saying that unless she had her coffee each morning, that she got a terrible headache. My grandmother, told me that she never even tried coffee after that, even though it smelled wonderful, because she was afraid of getting headaches. Grandmother said she had never seen a coffee mill before that, and her grandmother would let Josey crank the mill to grind her morning coffee. (PLH) 6, Told to me about 1982.
Research
I wish I could tell you I had concrete documentation that Thursey was the daughter of Russell Gist. I wish the Sharp County courthouse had not burned in 1882 and destroyed the will of Russell Gist. What few records that do exist for Sharp County before the fire show the Will of Russell Gist was entered into probate in 1877. I have seen the Bible of John Richard Sawrie who married Tennessee Gist. The name is spelled Gist in the Bible and it states that Tennessee was the daughter of Russell Gist and Elizabeth Nancy Isham.
I did an extensive study of the records of Independence County Arkansas and the only person in the county from about 1840 to the mid 1870s with a name any things like Gist was Russell. The result of this search was my reason for stating Thursey was the daughter of Russell. I don't remember how Thursey's name is spelled in the marriage record.
I have seen the name spelled Guest but in the majority of the records I have found for Russell the name was spelled Gist. (Ruth Hinkle Kicklighter, 3 July 2002)195
