Surname variations have come from census information or communications with people bearing the name. Most are quite rare in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

Recently both the US and UK have released some census information that shows the rank in the general population of many of the variations. Interestingly the results are quite different on each side of the Atlantic.

Rank is the order in the frequency in which the surname occurs in the population. In the US, Smith is the most common surname, and Johnson is next most common, thus Smith is ranked 1st, Johnson 2nd, etc. So Hathcock is the 7,535th most common surname in the US. In other words, there are 7.534 surnames with more people than Hathcock.

These US figures were taken from the US Government Census and as of April 1, 2000 the US population was 281,421,906 people.

The Census site covers the methodology they used to come up with the percentages and rank for the surnames. Unfortunately the site does not give actual counts for each surname, only the percentage of the overall population. Except for Hathcock the percentage is too small to be represented, so there is no count available.

These UK figures are from the Office of National Statistics of the UK and give an actual count of the number of persons for each surname. There are 269,353 surnames in the UK database, representing 54,412,638 people as of September 2002. Surnames representing fewer than five persons have been excluded from their database.

These two databases used different methodologies to come up with their results. Rare surnames will not get a search result in the US census site, while they will in the UK site if there are more than five person with the surname.
